Most of us look at the festive season as one of the highlights of the year. With the turkey ordered, the tree up and presents bought, all that remains is to relax, catch up with friends and family and generally eat, drink and be merry. But not everyone is so lucky.
This Christmas, 131,000 children across the UK will wake up homeless, according to Shelter. That’s why Optal recently held a fund-raiser for the charity which made over £2,300.
We believe, as Shelter does, that everyone in the country has the right to a safe home. Yet millions in Britain today are being denied that right. Many are homeless, while others suffer from the threat of eviction, rising rents, discrimination and poor living conditions. According to the charity: as many as six million households are denied the right to a safe home or are threatened with losing it; 90,000 are stuck in unsuitable temporary accommodation; and over 4,700 people sleep rough on the streets on any given night.
Shelter is helping to make a difference by driving improvements in conditions and consumer protections, pushing the government to increase the stock of social housing, fighting discrimination in the courts, and providing housing advice to those who need it most.
Our Christmas raffle
To support this fantastic cause, we recently enlisted the help some partners and local businesses to donate prizes to a Christmas raffle. A big thanks to:
Mastercard, Visa, Feedzai, London Edition Hotel, Apex Hotel London Wall, Hilton Kensington, WG Office supplies.
Our staff stepped up to buy tickets worth £2370 for the goodies on offer — all of which goes to Shelter. As we head into 2019 and continue to grow as a company we’ll be looking for more ways throughout the year to continue this charitable giving.
